This is my personal blog which is mainly about history – the history of people who are often overlooked by historians: migrants, travellers, the poor, the dispossessed.
I have an MA in Literature, History & Culture (2001) and also write about the history of popular culture, including football. My main interests are in labouring-class history in eighteenth-century East Anglia and the history of Fascism in Britain, particularly between 1930 and 1950.
I’ve written four books & co-authored two more. I’ve also written for History Today, New Law Journal, Suffolk Review and other publications.
This is a great website you have created
Thank you, Jagdish. I really appreciate your comment.
Really enjoyed your article on the Blackshirts and I’ve shared it to a group interested in the period.
Thank you. I appreciate it very much.
Really enjoy your blog – thought-provoking. Btw have you ever researched the anarchist writer & resident of Debenham, Suffolk who died a few years back in Ipswich hospital?

Colin Wilson – forgot to add name’
Thanks. I was about to ask! I know a bit about Colin Wilson but from his time in London. No idea about the Debenham connection. I will certainly look into it when I have time. Thanks also for your kind words about the blog.
Great work here – really interesting, I am looking to pull together specific history on Bury St Edmunds. Are you able to help?
Thanks for your kind words, Ed. I’m really not an expert on BSE history to be honest (more Suffolk in general), so it would depend what was required. I can probably put you in touch with someone who is a very knowledgeable Bury historian though.
Best wishes, Susan
Some absolutely fascinating material here. I only tripped over your site but thankfully I did. I was really taken with the Frances Barlee account. Great work, thank you.
What a lovely message to receive on a grey, rainy morning. Thank you so much. SG
